HKDA Global Design Awards 2018 Award Presentation Ceremony
Event
The HKDA GDA 2018 Presentation Ceremony was held at the Amphitheatre of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. ‘Convergency’, which concurred the message of ‘gathering of talents and ideas’ was the main theme that HKDA wanted to emphasize at this ceremony. The theatre was built with a flat stage with three stacks of tiered seats arranged in a U shape. Its physical set up could neither drive pointed focus spot on nor facilitate the delivery of the main theme.
Given only a modest budget, Oval created a light bulb installation that was made up by 11 sets of staggered platforms installed with 1,617 daily used LED light bulbs. Each light bulb sat on a transparent and flimsy tube embodying a wiring to power like it was suspended in the air. Each symbolized an awardee and represented the becoming alive of a creative idea.
All wirings were linked to a self-developed computer programme which provided signals that transform the light bulbs into a digital installation with 77 x 21 pixels. Through graphics and messages animated in convergence motion and resonated with different happenings, the ambience of the event was amplified.
In parallel, the effect of bringing forth a convergence of design talents was also solidified and magnified.
Oval’s installation has helped send a strong message among local and global audience that night: let outstanding designs and designers be appreciated when they converge.
HKDA has deployed pixels for creating the main visual of GDA 2018. The defining message behind is: fundamentals are not to be dwarfed and that designers would converge at GDA happenings like pixels coming together to become graphics.
Location: HKADA
Client: Hong Kong Designers Association
