Urban Renewal Exploration Centre
Interior
A permanent exhibition for the public to examine the four main areas of work (the “4R”) of the Urban Renewal Authority, namely redevelopment, preservation, rehabilitation and revitalisation.
The design plays with the contrast between modernity and dilapidation to evoke in visitors a strong emotional response towards urban decay. Visitors, whose first impression of the space is one of modernity and sophistication, experience an about turn when they see concealed behind the reception area a mock-up of a tenement flat (more commonly referred to as “caged home”) painstakingly constructed with artifacts from the 60s and 70s, both genuine and reproduced ones.
Please also visit http://www.urec.org.hk/html/en/media_gallery.html for a virtual tour of the Centre.
This project is an Astrid Awards Silver Award winner (2009).
Location: Grand Millennium Plaza,181 Queen's Road Central,HK
